AIDS in Black America

July 29th, 2008

Did you know that AIDS is the #1 killer of black women between the ages of 25-44? THE NUMBER ONE KILLER.  That’s above cancers and heart disease. Black women now account for the highest transmission rate out of any other high risk category. That means, they are above men who have sex with men and I.V. drug users.  Did you know it has been this way for 11 years now?

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be posting video of a special that was done by ABC News.  Please watch….

In September, I will be participating in the Stop AIDS Walk for Cincinnati, as I have done for many years.  There are many cities around the country and the world that hold AIDS walks that benefit local social service agencies that help in the fight against AIDS and who devote their lives to taking care of those affected by AIDS. And that’s not just the client, that includes their families, friends and the community as a whole. Find out about walks in your area.

Readers, many of you know this from previous posts, but my biological father passed away from this awful disease back in 2001.  I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.  Today, we are lucky to have these agencies who fight to keep us safe, who continue to educate us and who work for a cure. This disease is not a death sentence like it was in the 80’s, but there is so much work that needs to be done with regard to education, prevention, testing and conversations about HIV/AIDS.  No matter where you live, what minority group you’re in or how safe you think you are…you can be affected by this disease.

Educate yourself. Help educate others. Volunteer. Donate. Walk. Join me and others in this fight against this epidemic.
